Dore is a true hidden gem. A slice of old English flavour sitting in the Sheffield hills, this quaint village has charm by the bucket-load, and rightly so. Dore has long held the title as being Sheffield’s wealthiest suburb, and a quick look around will show you why, with it’s characterful cottages and old village shopfronts, everywhere you look there is something new to pique the interest. The name Dore derives from the same Old English root as door, signifying a ‘gateway’ or pass between two kingdom – in Anglo Saxon times Dore was the marker point of the end of Mercia and the start of what would later come to be called Northumbria. King Egbert, who can be argued to be the first King of England, became a king at Dore and a marker of the site sits within the village.
This lovely little village is steeped in the past, but that does not mean it has turned it’s back on the future. Dore is one of those places that enjoys excellent commuter links to Sheffield and the North as well as Manchester by being situated on the trans-pennine railway, it is also perfectly situated for a quick drive into the centre or for a trip out into Derbyshire. The village also has plenty of modern homes as well as it’s characteristic traditional cottages and serves as one of the more desirable locations in Sheffield for a variety of reasons.
